Candidates for the UPSC CSE must choose their optional subject very carefully because it carries 500 marks for one particular subject in comparison to General studies where one has to study numerous subjects.
Two of the nine papers in the UPSC Mains Exam, GS VI and GS VII are the optional subject. The UPSC Mains optional exams carry 250 marks for each paper, Total 500 marks.
Literature of any one of the following languages: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, and English.
