UPSC OPTONAL SUBJECTS

Candidates for the UPSC CSE must choose their optional subject very carefully because it carries 500 marks for one particular subject in comparison to General studies where one has to study numerous subjects.

Two of the nine papers in the UPSC Mains Exam, GS VI and GS VII are the optional subject. The UPSC Mains optional exams carry 250 marks for each paper, Total 500 marks.

How to Choose an Optional Subject for UPSC Exam?

Choosing an Optional Subject for the UPSC requires a number of important considerations, including individual preference, the availability of study materials, the nature of the syllabus, educational background, and many others.
The subject that was studied during their graduation or postgraduation time should be taken into consideration as the first choice for a UPSC optional subject, as per the list of optional subjects. Because one would be aware of the basic concepts of that subject, there by helping in laying better foundation for the subject.
The availability of proper study material as well as good guidance are also an important factor which must be kept in mind during the selection of the optional subject for the UPSC as it helps in better preparation.
Choosing Optional subject which has overlapping with General studies is also very important factor as it helps in easing out preparation. Subjects like History, Public Administration, Political Science, Geography, Economics, Sociology are quiet popular subjects as well as has good overlapping with General studies subjects.
